EPT Barcelona Main Event – Day 1B Report

As the organizers had expected, the second Day 1 flight of the EPT’s Barcelona Main Event yielded a starting field of more than 600 players. To be precise, 670 players bellied up to the tables of the event, taking the poker tournament past the 1,000 player mark and right into record territory: the event thus became the biggest ever EPT event held on Spanish soil.
8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which exactly 300 players were missing from the tables. Guy Bachar was the one who managed to clinch the chip lead, having built a stack of 193.1k chips. Bachar’s leading stack was mostly the result of a late surge, which saw him take down a significant amount of chips during the very last level of the day. A crucial hand during this stretch was the one which resulted in his elimination of PokerStars pro Sandra Naujoks. Bachar had Ac, 8c against his opponent’s As, 6s. Despite the late charge, Bachar was unable to overtake Day 1A chip leader Aku Joentausta, thus he will not start day 2 from pole position.

If there were 10 PokerStars pros in the field on Day 1A, Day 1B saw no fewer than 20 of them belly up to the tables. Dario Minieri and Jonathan Duhamel were amongst them, but they both fell relatively early. Nacho Barbero and Bertrand Grospellier didn’t fare much better either. Johnny Lodden on the other hand fought back viciously and even though he was stuck as a short-stack for most of the day, he almost made it to day two. In the end, he was forced to admit defeat though, sent packing on an A,K vs pocket 9s coin-flip.

Several other pros made it to the end of the day though: Theo Jorgensen did so behind a respect-worthy stack, and so did Ivan Demidov. Others who made it on lesser stacks were Barry Greenstein, Daniel Negreanu and Jason Mercier.
