EPT Barcelona Main Event – Day 2 Report

The EPT’s Barcelona Main Event broke all records this year, drawing a starting field of 1,082 players and becoming the biggest EPT event ever held in Spain. Through two day 1 flights the field had played down to 600 players who returned to move closer to the finish line on Day 2. After 6 levels of action, the field had whittled down to 215. During the day, John Juanda managed to put together an impressive run as a result of which his stack grew to 732.4k chips, enough to hand him the provisional chip lead.
The hand which propelled Juanda to the top was a rather standard one. It saw him hit a bottom set with pocket 3s on a flop of K,10,3. An opponent of his had K,7 in his pocket and made the all-in move with the top pair. Juanda obviously pounced on the opportunity and he scooped up a massive pot after his bottom set held up.
Not all the ‘name’ players had it going as easy as Juanda though. Pius Heinz had a pretty rough ride, and he was eventually bounced by Liya Gerasimova, the EPT Barcelona Ladies’ Event winner.
PokerStars’ own Daniel Negreanu had a tough day as well, although the outcome of his run turned out to be radically different from Heinz’s after all. Negreanu didn’t really do much through the day. Being card dead most of the time, he sat and awaited an opportunity to get something going. That opportunity presented itself late in the day when two players shoved all-in in front of him. After some tanking, the
PokerStars pro made the call and proceeded to knock out both his opponents, taking down a massive pot and finishing the day behind a stack of 248.6k chips.
The list of ‘name’ players who failed to navigate the treacherous waters of day 2 with Negreanu’s finesse was long: Jason Mercier was eliminated, together with Gus Hansen, Faraz Jaka, Davidi Kitai and Terje Augdal.
