EPT Campione – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the
EPT’s Campione Main Event saw 178 players belly up to the tables of the Casino di Campione, on the shores of Lake Lugano. The player turn-out was relatively out of sync with the organizers’ expectations, but as it’s usually the case, the second day 1 flight is bound to attract a much sturdier starting field, thus making up for the Day 1A shortfall.
At the end of the day, Davide Andreoni climbed to the top of the chip counts, on the back of his 175.1k stack. Andreoni didn’t have an easy day. He found a formidable opponent in Dario Nittolo, with whom he tangled several times throughout the day. Eventually, it was Andreoni who came out on top in this bout. Given how day 1A of this event usually attracts massive crowds of Italian amateurs, the best way to navigate the treacherous tournament waters has long been deemed to be straightforward play. Many defied common knowledge though, among them Chile’s Nick Yunis, who got fancy and played way too many hands. As a result, he had quite a rollercoaster of a day, taking his stack to 100k chips at one point, then falling back down. Eventually, Yunis managed to get the better of most of his opponents and after he took a couple of massive pots off Rasmus Nielsen and Simon Persson, he finished with 169.2k chips, enough to clinch him second place for the day.
Team
PokerStars Pro stayed away from the tables on Day 1A: there were only 4 PokerStars players involved in the hostilities, among them Luca Pagano and Alex Kravchenko. Both players managed to survive the day, albeit they both made it on short stacks.
Theo Jorgensen busted out early, followed by Pierre Neuville and Cristian Dragomir. There were several other ‘name’ players who fell on day 1A too: Casey Kastle, Jack Dempsey, McLean Karr and James Mitchell all bit the dust.
