EPT Copenhagen – Day 1A report

The first day 1 flight of the 2011
EPT Copenhagen Main Event saw a starting field of 213 belly up to the tables, safe from the snow and nasty weather that marked the waning days of winter in the Danish capital. Needless to say everyone had Anton Wigg’s performance in mind: Wigg had managed to best a starting field of 423 last year, to make off with the $672k top prize.
For the majority of Day 1A registrants that dream went up in smoke in a hurry. Only 135 players were left when the day was called, with Mark Hirleman from the US leading the pack. An online poker qualifier who won his seat through PokerStars, Hirleman managed to build a 163,400 stack to finish on top.
Per Linde played well too, as a matter of fact, he led the field right till the last couple of levels when Hirleman picked up a few hefty pots to vault past him.
Anton Wigg, last year’s winner, was present as well and he started off in high gear, leading the field for a while. He got unlucky later though and lost a coin-flip. The one thing we do know about him now: we won’t have a repeat winner this year.
Peter Eastgate, the fresh-out-of-retirement
WSOP Main Event Champion also played. The break he took from poker didn’t seem to have affected his game in a negative way. He played well and finished day 1A with a healthy stack.
PokerStars pro Arnaud Mattern had a really tough run. He had his pocket rockets cracked twice, and once he lost with pocket Ks too, but all that bad luck failed to faze him: he finished on a more than decent stack considering his woes.
James Akenhead on the other hand wasn’t that lucky. He was bounced early on. Annette Obrestad, and Johnny Lodden both made it through to day 2 though.
