EPT Copenhagen – Day 1b report

The second day 1 flight of the
2011 EPT Copenhagen Main Event saw a throng of 235 players belly up to the tables within the warm and cozy confines of the Radisson Blu hotel, which was in stark contrast with the blizzard raging outside.
This batch of registrants took the overall starting field to 449, managing to best last year’s 423. The massive starting field meant a total prize-pool of €2 million, of which the winner would take home a lion’s share of €496k.
Already known as one of the toughest stops of the EPT, the Copenhagen stop further built that reputation by attracting some of the best players from the Scandinavian countries. Juha Helppi, the Hellraiser was there, together with William Thorson and his brother and
PokerStars’ Viktor Blom. John Duthie, Sebastian Ruthernberg and Florian Langmann also played.
As always, early in the tournament Blom played relying on Lady Luck’s help heavily. At one point, he ran his pocket 10s into an opponent’s pocket rockets and made a straight to survive. He started to bleed chips later though, and by the time he felt that his back had hit the wall and shoved all-in holding Kh, 10h, his stack was already shorter than his starting one. The all-in happened on a flop containing 2 more hearts, so Blom basically had a flush draw. He was called by Ramzi Jelassi who had pocket rockets. No hearts fell on the turn and the river and Blom was done.
Jelassi went on to finish the day near the top of the pops. William Thorson and Sebastian Ruthenberg also failed to make it past the day 1 hurdle. They were joined on the rail by Toby Lewis and Roberto Romanello.
John Duthie, Jake Cody and David Wamplew had much better Day 1 runs though: they all survived and will return to the tables on Day 2.
Domantas Kilmciauskas finished with the largest stack.
