EPT Deauville – Day 1a report

The first day 1 flight of the EPT’s Deauville Main Event kicked off on Monday, as 419 players showed up buy-in in hand and hope in their hearts. The goal was of course survival to the second day of action, and of the 419 green felt warriors, only a small percentage managed to achieve that goal.
The field was littered with huge names.
PokerStars’ contingent alone would’ve been enough to fill a million dollar cash game table. Victoria Coren, Praz Bansi, John Duthie, Matt Perrins and Jack Elwood represented the world’s largest online poker room. At the end of the day, it would be local boy Guillaume De la Gorce leading the pack though.
De La Gorce gathered 196,800 chips to secure the top spot. Jake Cody, the reigning champion of the event, was there as well. Cody hung in there heroically, not an easy feat considering that pretty much everyone at his table was out to get him. With only a few minutes remaining in the day, he got it all-in against 3 other players, with pocket 9s. Against so many drawing hands, his lowly pocket pair didn’t really stand a chance though, and the chances of a repeat on his part went up in a puff of smoke.
PokerStars’ Victoria Coren failed to make it to day 2 too. She was one of the early casualties. John Duthie bit the dust relatively early on as well. Fernando Brito, the prime candidate for the Player of the Year title, got crippled early too. Brito had a set of kings against an opponent’s set of deuces when the latter landed a 4th deuce to send the Player of the Year hopeful to the bottom of the chip counts.
Interesting faces at the
EPT Deauville’s tables were those of Raymond Domenech – the coach of the French national soccer team – and Fatima Moreira De Melo.
