EPT Deauville – Day 3 report

With the money bubble set for 128th place and with 205 players showing up for Day 3 action in the Casino Barriere, in Deauville, France, in the EPT Deauville Main Event, it was clear from the get go that heads would have to roll before the survivors could lighten up a little, safe in the knowledge that they would not have to go home empty-handed. No fewer than 77 players would still go home with the proverbial wooden spoon. One of the first victims of the day was Salvatore Bonavena, former EPT Prague Main Event winner, who got the last of his chips into the middle holding pocket Qs against an opponent’s A,10. The appearance of another A on the board spelled the end for the Italian.

PokerStars’ Betrand “ElkY” Grospellier felt no early pressure though, and when he’s composed and in good shape, the Frenchman is indeed a force to be reckoned with at the table. Add to that the advantage of the home felt, and you have a killer combination of circumstances which explain extremely well how he managed to double up on a full house to move on to the table where Praz Bansi and Matthew Frankland played. What ensued was a poker lesson basically for the railbirds, at the end of which Praz Bansi managed to move on to day 4, with some extra chips lining his pocket.
David Sonelin started the day as the chip leader, and while he was forced to give up his lead, the online qualifier did manage to hang in there and to tide his stack through to day 4. Once reached, the money bubble showed no intentions of ever wanting to burst. There were at least 3 all-in situations in which the short-stacks lived to fight another day before Bernard Guigon was bounced, much to the delight of the surviving field.
After the bubble, play loosened up, and when the action was called, only 90 players had chips bagged. Raphael Kroll will start the day with the largest stack.
