EPT Deauville – Day 5: Jake Cody Wins

8 remaining players bellied up to the final table of the EPT Deauville Main Event, in front of the TV cameras, 7 of them trailing chip leader Teodor Caraba, but all of them equally hungry to cut themselves as large a piece of the record-size prize-pool as possible. 7 of them would leave the table disappointed, with one Jake Cody raising the trophy and pocketing the €847,000 top prize at the end of it all.

Team PokerStars Pro Peter Eastgate started the final table as the short-stack, and sure enough, his live tournament experience wouldn’t be able to save him: he became the first victim of the final table when Craig Bergeron’s K,9o made short work of his pocket 10s on a K, Q, 4 flop.

Following Eastgate’s elimination, play tightened up a bit and it took Michael Fratty almost 2 hours to bust out. Jake Cody was responsible for Fratty’s elimination, as his pocket Ks cut through Fratty’s A,Q like a hot knife through butter. Stephane Albertini was foolish enough to lock horns with Cody next, holding nothing but a flimsy Kc, 9c. Cody was more than happy to accept his challenge as he held rockets in his pocket, and thus Albertini’s poker tournament came to an end in 6th place.

Claudius Secara was the next victim, falling in the war of the premium pocket pairs against Mike McDonald. Secara’s J,J proved to be no match to McDonald’s K,K and Secara picked up a handsome €165,000 for his 5th place.
Craig Bergeron took over 4-handed play for a while, but one misstep was enough to have him locked in a battle he couldn’t win against the unstoppable Jake Cody. Cody had Ad, 7d against Bergeron’s J,10o and he managed to catch an A on the board to send the American packing in 4th.

Mike McDonald pitted his pocket Js against Teodor Caraba’s A,10o next, and his hopes were almost immediately blown away as an A landed on the flop. The start of the heads-up stage of the poker tournament saw Caraba enjoy a 2-1 chip advantage. After some back and forth, complete with successful and busted bluffs, the final hand of the event saw Caraba go all-in on an A,K against Cody’s K,K. The Brit’s kings held up and he took down the €847,000 prize and the winner’s trophy.
