EPT Deauville – Day 5 Report

Day 5 of the EPT’s Deauville Main event was a relatively short affair: it lasted a little over 6 hours, as the field played down from the final 24 to the 8-handed final table. Paul Guichard emerged as the chip leader at the end of the day; he amassed a stack of 5.95 million chips, but still failed to secure a comforting lead over second place man Vadzim Kursevich. Guichard’s big break came when he took a monster pot off Olivier Rogez, by making a flush. That pot vaulted him clear into the lead and from there on out, he never really had any kind of problems. Although Guichard’s performance was certainly impressive, Kursevich’s second place meant that he had successfully secured his second EPT final table within a year’s time.

PokerStars’ Luca Pagano was the one who started the final table with the largest stack. Things didn’t go nearly as well for him though as they did on Day 4, and he dropped chips left and right, looking quite unable to make the final table. Eventually, he made the cut but he did so on a relatively short-ish stack, so he will start the final dash in 5th place.
The highlight of the 5th day of action was the final table bubble. Sergey Baburin was the unfortunate player who bit the dust right on the bubble. He shoved all-in with a 9,10o on a board of Q,Q,10,2 and he was called by Bruno Jais, who had K,Q for the trip ladies. Chris Brammer was another victim of Day 5: he hit the rail before the final table bubble. Other such victims were Marc Inizan and Kevin Vandersmissen.
Olivier Rogez on the other hand, made the final table, on a relatively healthy stack of 4.4 million chips no less.
According to French law, players can make no deals among them, so the winner is guaranteed to pick up exactly €875k.
