EPT Deauville High Roller – Day 1 Report

The EPT Deauville’s €10k High Roller is definitely among the main attractions of the stop. The poker tournament features deep stacks and a blinds structure meant to offer precedence to the skill factor in the game over the luck one. The first day of the event saw 83 players belly up to the tables. Given that there were 14 re-buys, the prize-pool was said to be in the neighborhood of €1 million. At the end of the day, 51 players were left standing. The player who managed to clinch the chip lead going into day 2 was Vladimir Troyanovsky, who finished behind a stack of 266.2k chips.
Troyanovsky had a great start to his day: he picked up quads and he got Roberto Romanello to tag along and pay him. He continued in the same fashion through the day.
Kevin Vandersmissen finished the day on a healthy stack as well. JC Alvarado finished among the large stacks too. PokerStars’ Eugene Katchalov and Victoria Coren also made it through the day, albeit on much smaller stacks.

Despite the re-buy option, many of the “name” competitors who busted on Day 1 chose not to put €10k more onto the line. Thus, we will not be seeing Roberto Romanello return on Day 2. Dominik Nitsche was eliminated as well, and he chose to stay away from the tables too. Dimitar Danchev will be missing too, together with Kent Lundmark. While some of the pros admitted defeat after their first bullet missed its target, some of them pushed their luck a bit and re-bought, only to bite the dust again. PokerStars pro Bertrand Grospellier was one of these players. He was joined on the rail by fellow double-bust-outs Steve O’Dwyer and Michael Tureniec.
