EPT Grand Final Monte Carlo – Day 1B Report

The second day 1 flight of the EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final drew a massive starting field of 394 players, taking the total number of participants to 665. Nicolas Yunis was the one who finished the day with the largest stack: he managed to accumulate 191.7k, quite a bit more than that of the provisional chip leader of Day 1A, Martin Kabrhel, whose 167.8k stack was handily eclipsed. As a matter of fact, Yunis wasn’t the only player who topped Kabrhel’s stack. Second place man Ivan Kudriavtcev finished with 186.3k chips, followed by Andoni Larrabe Sanchez, with 181.3k.
Yunis’ rise to the top wasn’t a particularly spectacular one. He built his stack little –by-little through the day, there were no noteworthy hands or monster pots going his way. He just ground away at the opposition and collected the rewards in the end.

Scores of ‘name’ players saw action on Day 1B, among them many Team PokerStars pros. Pius Heinz, Humberto Brenes, Fatima de Melo, Jason Mercier and Marcel Luske were all there and they all managed to advance successfully. Several others weren’t that lucky: Victoria Coren and Lex Veldhuis were both eliminated, together with Eugene Katchalov and Jonathan Duhamel.
There were other notables – not Team PokerStars pro members – who had good days too: Erik Seidel, Tom Marchese, Maria Ho, Annette Obrestad and Stephen Chidwick were all among those who moved on to day 2. One ‘name’ player made outstandingly good progress on Day 1B: Alessio Isaia. Isaia built a stack of 139.6k chips, finishing in 5th place.

Franck Blanc finished in 4th ahead of Isaia with 160.9k chips. From Isaia to the next player in the top 10 there’s quite a bit of a chip-gap. Andres Artinano ended up in 6th place, behind a stack of 125.2k chips.
Geert-Jan Potijk rounded out the top 10. The Dutchman finished with 116k chips to his name.
