EPT London High Roller – Day 1 Report

The Main Event is indeed the focal point of the EPT’s London stop, but there’s much more to this bona-fide poker festival than that. The £20k
EPT London High Roller event is definitely not something one can just brush aside. Given the monstrous buy-in, this event is pretty much guaranteed to only attract high profile competitors. Sure enough, the 75 players who showed up were all poker professionals, either members of Team PokerStars Pro or playing at other online sites and live events.
Last year, the event had seen a starting field of 77, so in that respect, a small step back was registered this year. Still, this year’s field combined buy-ins to create a £520k prize-pool.
At the end of the day, of the 75 players only 30 were still in contention for the money. Sam Stein had accumulated a stack of 240k chips, enough to give him the chip lead for the day.
Mike Watson played well too and he managed to surpass the 200k mark as well. Isaac Haxton joined the two of them at the top of the pops.
Team
PokerStars Pro was massively represented yet again. Johnny Lodden, Bertrand Grospellier, Vanessa Rousso, Barry Greenstein and John Duthie all played. None of these players managed to survive the first day of action though.
Isaac Haxton was the one who was responsible for the Barry Greenstein’s elimination. The deed happened close to the end of the day, when they two shoved all-in on a flop of A, J, 9. Greenstein had A,5 while Haxton had Q,10 for the straight draw. The turn fell a 10 and the river a K to fill Haxton’s draw, sending Greenstein to the rail.
Tony G, Tobias Reinkemeier and Viktor Blom were all eliminated as well.
There were plenty of name players who made the cut though. Phil Collins was among them, together with Sam Trickett, Joe Hachem and Eugene Katchalov.
