EPT London High Roller – Day 1 Report

On Thursday, the EPT’s London £10k High Roller kicked off, with 127 buy-ins tossed into the prize-pool. Given the unexpectedly large starting field, the organizers were forced to make the High Roller a 3-day tournament, instead of the originally planned 2-day span. A total of 8 levels of action went into the day, at the end of which Paul Volpe emerged as the chip leader. Volpe has been on quite a roll lately, making several deep runs and final tables in various high profile events world-over and he didn’t disappoint this time either. He finished the day with a stack of 239k chips, quite a bit more than that of second place woman Victoria Coren, who had 211.7k bagged. Davidi Kitai finished 3rd with 171.7k chips to his name.
The first day of the High Roller saw several players take advantage of the re-buy option. Bryn Kenney for instance lost his first stack relatively early and he re-bought. PokerStars pro Bertrand Grospellier and Marvin Rettenmaier did the same.

Anton Wigg was kept honest in a massive bluff which ended up costing him his stack. He too was among those who re-bought.
While some made good use of their second buy-in, some of the participants managed to squander that second opportunity too. Jonathan Duhamel for instance was bounced twice: first by Paul Volpe and then by Vanessa Selbst. Toby Lewis and Tony G were eliminated as well, but they decided against firing a second bullet.
Mike McDonald and Jason Mercier registered for the event fresh off their Main Event eliminations. Sam Trickett played too, and he looked like he was going to advance to day 2 for a while. He had 90k chips before the last 4 hands of the day, which ended up claiming his tournament life.
