The
EPT’s London stop created quite a few champions over the last week, none of them more celebrated and better rewarded though than Robin Ylitalo, the winner of the Main Event, who ended up pocketing £560.9k on Saturday. Ylitalo bested a starting field of 604 players and he made no deals on his way to the top.
The first victim of the last day of action was Kully Sidhu, who was bounced in 8th place by Georgios Karakousis. Karakousis had a J,10o in what would turn out to be his opponent’s last hand in the tournament, and he kick-started the preflop betting. In response, Sidhu pushed all-in holding an A,Qo. The flop gave Karakousis a pair of Js as well as a straight draw to his opponent. No 10 fell on the turn or the river though, and thus Sidhu took the bad beat, picking up £60.6k for his 8th place.
The next victim was Jan Olav Sjavik, whose 7th place was worth £88.1k. Sjavik was followed out the door by Stefan Vagner, who picked up £118.2 for his efforts, becoming the first player to finish with a 6-figure prize.
Jeff Rossiter, the start of the day chip leader, got his stack into the middle immediately after the break, with pocket 4s. Georgios Karakousis made the call with a K,Q for the classic coin-flip. The first card to hit the board was a Q, and Rossiter’s tournament life began floating away. Neither the turn nor the river helped him out, and he was sent packing in 5th place, picking up a £152.3k prize.
He was followed to the rail by Ludovic Geilich, who was followed in turn by Leo McClean, whose elimination in 3rd place set up the heads-up race between the eventual winner and Karakousis. The last hand of the event saw Ylitalo’s Ac,Kc best Karakousis’ A,6o.
