EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Day 1B Report

As expected, the second day 1 flight of the
EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final yielded a much bigger starting field than its Day 1A. Still, only 423 players bellied up to the tables, which means that the event fell well short of last season’s attendance numbers. After 8 levels of action, the player who had the largest stack bagged was Victor Sbrissa, he of LAPT Sao Paulo fame. Sbrissa finished with 224.8k chips in his stack, well ahead of second place man Noah Schwartz. Schwarz finished with 204.6k. There were indeed quite a few notables in the Day 1B starting field, and quite a few of them made it to the top of the provisional leader board as well.
In fact, the end-off-the-day top 10 included no fewer than 8 “name” players. Besides Schwartz, Calvin Anderson, Oleksii Kovalchuk, Andrew Lichtenberger, Victor Ramdin, Marcin Horecki and Igor Kurganov all made the top of the pops.
The abundance of high-profile professionals in the field also meant though that many of them would bite the dust through the day. Indeed, Jan Peter-Jachtmann, the winner of the WSOP’s $10k PLO event was sent packing during the second level of action. He was followed shortly by Max Lykov and Kevin MacPhee.
With all the players getting bounced and the tables re-arranged, a true “table of death” was created on Day 1B: Sam Trickett played at it, together with Vanessa Selbst, Calvin Anderson, JP Kelly and Russell Carson. Calvin Anderson was the only survivor of the bunch as all the others bit the dust.
Michael Mizrachi played too, together with
PokerStars pro Eugene Katchalov. They were both among the early victims of the action, together with Katchalov’s fellow PokerStars pro Lex Veldhuis.
Viktor Blom and Phil Ivey were eliminated too.
