EPT Monte Carlo Grand Final – Day 1B report

Day 1B of the PokerStars EPT’s Monte Carlo Grand Final drew a starting field of 497 players, bigger than that of Day 1A, and established the eventual size of the prize-pool, which in turn set the winner’s share of the haul to €1,700,000. The action kicked off a little earlier than on Day 1A. At the end of the day’s hostilities, Brazil’s Thiago Nishijima set behind the largest stack of chips. The Brazilian had managed to amass 264,200 chips. Paul Berende followed in second place, with 70k chips fewer than Nishijima.
Berende worked his way into second place by taking down a huge pot in which he sent two opponents to the rail. Berende had A,K against the other two guys’ A,Q and J,J and he proceeded to hit a king on the flop for the win.

Joe Cada, the 2009 WSOP Main Event Champ had finally made the news too. He finished with 123,600 chips to secure a spot at the top of the provisional leader board of the poker tournament. He got lucky towards the end of the day when he got the majority of his chips into the middle on K,K against a player’s A,Q and managed to fade the other guy’s outs.
Yevgeniy Timoshenko also managed to amass more than 100k chips. Andrew Pantling finished the day with a healthy stack as well.
Teddy Sheringham and PokerStars’ Gael Monfils also made it to Day 2. Ultimate Bet’s Liv Boeree and Glen Chorny will also be at the tables on Day 2.

Pieter De Korver failed to make it through though, and with this the possibilities of a double have pretty much gone up in smoke on the part of last year’s winner of the event. He got all his chips in on a 4-card flush on the flop, but his opponent made a boat to outs him in a hurry.

Other players who failed to remain in contention were Daniel Negreanu, Gus Hansen, John Juanda, Jason Mercier, Erick Lindgren and Sorel Mizzi. Mizzi played pretty well, as he even folded pocket rockets on one occasion on a flop of 7,7,7.
Thierry Van Den Berg had 9,7 for the quad. Dodging this bullet wouldn’t save Mizzi though.
A total of a little over 400 players will return to battle it out on Day 2 of the poker tournament, with Nishijima starting as the overall chip leader.
