EPT San Remo – Day 1A Report

The 1st Day 1 flight of the EPT San Remo Main Event attracted a starting field of 438 players. Some of these guys were late to register and with the fuss surrounding the seating, the official start of the tournament was delayed by 2 hours.
Last year, Liv Boeree won the event, taking down a record-setting top prize. This year, the organizers were obviously hoping that the prize-pool would soar past that mark. There were certainly enough “name” players in the Day 1A starting field to warrant such expectations. PokerStars’ Arnaud Mattern and Viktor Blom were both there, together with Martin Hruby and Pieter de Korver. Jake Cody, Anton Wigg and Vadim Markushevski also played.
Mayu Roca was one of the early chip leaders. The Columbian has taken up residence in Europe a few months ago and since then he managed to amass more than $100k in poker winnings. As the dinner break approached, several of Roca’s pursuers began to close the gap. Andrew Teng, Ramzi Jelassi and Michael Eiler were all among the hopefuls.
JP Kelly, Martins Adeniya and Tom MacDonald did well too.

Team PokerStars Pro member Arnaud Mattern had a rough day and he busted well short of the Day 1A finish line.
After a good initial run, two of the young British players, JP Kelly and Tom MacDonald found themselves in a sudden hole after they had bluffed away a large percentage of their chips. Victor Blom began to feel the squeeze too as the blinds increased and eventually he got his last chips into the middle on a nut straight. Unfortunately for him, someone at the table had a full house and he was bounced.
Chris Moorman was eliminated in a similar manner and Joao Barbosa bit the dust too before the end of the day.
225 players remained when the day was called, Leonid Bilokur the possessor of the largest stack among them.
