EPT San Remo – Day 1B report

Posted by: James Carter. - Sun, 2010-04-18 11:39

As many have anticipated on Day 1A, the starting field record of the PokerStars EPT’s San Remo stop has been broken on Day 1B. 656 players bellied up to the tables on Day 1B, taking the total number of participants to 1,240. That’s about 60 entries more than the 2009 starting field. The poker tournament set another record too, for the largest attendance of an EPT Europe event.
Betrand “ElkY” Grospellier was one of the top runners of the day. The Frenchman got off to a quick start and never bothered to look back. The fact that he’d end the day among the chip leaders became obvious during the second level of action. He took down a pot on a hand which is sure to make that highlights-reel of the poker tournament: Grospellier tangled with Philipp Gruissem on a flop of 2,2,Q which gave both players monster hands. Gruissem picked up a set with his pocket Qs but Grospellier had him covered with his pocket 2s which made quads on the flop. Two Ks hit the board too, and chips were shoveled into the middle as Gruissem’s boat fell to ElkY’s quads in the end. Grospellier never slowed down from that point on, but the chip lead got snatched from his clutches before the day’s end. Dutchman Michael Eerhart was the one responsible for the deed. He amassed a stack of 247,800 chips to clinch the chip leader’s position.
Other players to finish near the top were Bernard Boutboul, Kevin MacPhee and Rasmus Nielsen.

Due to the strong nature of the Day 1B starting field, those who survived the day were pretty much all high caliber players, not to be overlooked when considering deep-run capabilities. Quinn Do was one of the players who did well and managed to finish on healthy stacks. Online poker regular Sami Kelopuro is still very much in contention too, with nearly 100k chips.
Jason Mercier, Jeff Sarwer and Tobias Reikemeier finished with reasonable stacks as well.

Mike Sowers hit a rough snag early in the day. He made a set of nines and ran head-first into an opponent’s set of Js for the early bust.
Chino Rheem and PokerStars’ Peter Eastgate made the casualty list too, together with Vanessa Rousso, Barry Greenstein, Joe Cada and Richard Toth.
