EPT San Remo – Day 5 Report

Nicolas Yunis started the 5th day of the EPT’s San Remo stop with the largest stack of chips. 24 players reconvened to battle it out for the final table, and when the objective was reached, Yunis was long gone from contention. Max Heinzelmann had a pretty rough Day 4 ride, but he rebounded nicely on Day 5, and he finished atop the provisional chip leader board, pretty much tied for the top spot with Rupert Elder. Having accumulated slightly more than 8 million chips, Elder was the official chip leader.
Max Lykov of team PokerStars Pro also managed to reach the final table, albeit on a stack which – through its meager size- doesn’t quite guarantee a bright future for him at the final table. Nicola Boldini was the first victim of the 5th day of action. He picked up As, 5s and he even hit a four-card flush on the flop, but he failed to fill it up on the turn and the river against an opponent’s pocket Js.

The pace of eliminations picked up as players hit their strides. Joe Cada swung into action, eliminating his friend, Fabrizio Cataldi on a Q,Q vs A,Q match-up. On the very next hand, Cada relinquished the lead which he had just clinched, by giving up a huge pot to Antonino Venneri.

Max Lykov’s moment of glory came against Marco Fabrini, who shoved all-in on pocket Js against Lykov’s Ah,Qh. Lykov proceeded to hit a Broadway straight to eliminate Fabrini in 15th place. Cada’s trip from chip leader to short-stack status was a surprisingly brief one. Having dropped a few pots here and there, he found himself all-in for his tournament life, holding Kh, 9h against Max Heinzelmann’s pocket Js. Cada hit a flush draw on the flop, but the turn and the river failed to come through for him. Heinzelmann then eliminated Andrew Teng to complete his spectacular comeback.
