EPT San Remo Main Event – Day 1A Report

The first day 1 flight of the EPT’s 2012 San Remo stop was a massive, 8-level long slugfest, at the end of which Erion Islamay emerged with the chip lead. He finished the day with a stack of 162.3k chips.
At the start of the day, 320 players showed up at the tables of the Casino San Remo, looking to make the all-important first step into day 2. Day 1A saw quite a number of ‘name’ pros belly up to the tables, among them Marcin Horecki and Jonathan Duhamel representing PokerStars. None of the above said two players managed to advance though.

Duhamel pushed all-in with an Ah,9h preflop against Walid Bou-Habib’s pocket 7s for the classic coin-flip. The board fell a bunch of bricks and Bou-Habib’s pocket 7s held for the win.
Scott Seiver was among those eliminated as well. He got his money into the middle with a solid set, holding pocket Ks on a board of K,9,7,10. The opponent who called him, had an A,J for the straight draw, and sure enough, on the river, an 8 fell which filled the straight and sent Seiver straight to the rail.
A handful of other notables suffered a similar fate by day’s end: Dominik Nietsche, Shannon Shorr and Arnaud Mattern were all eliminated, together with Anton Wigg and Mohsin Charania.

Despite some major Day 1A losses, Team PokerStars Pro maintained a massive presence through the day. Jude Ainsworth, Jason Mercier and Victor Ramdin were all among the survivors.
Other notables who finished the day on healthy stacks were Michael Ferrell, who had 146.6k chips bagged, David Peters (with 111.4k chips to his name) and Lorenzo Sabbato, who also managed to climb past the 100k chip mark. Another player who managed to finish near the top of the chip count was Matt Salsberg, who accumulated 135.2k chips. Day 1B of the event is expected to yield at least as big a starting field as day 1A.
