EPT Snowfest – Day 1A report

Poker players must be fed up with the winter cold because the starting field of the first day 1 flight of the EPT Snowfest stop proved to be quite disappointing. Only 180 players coughed up the €3,500 buy-in, which was a huge step back from last year’s 270 Day 1A starters. Day 1B – like last day 1 flights usually do – will likely see more players belly up to the tables, but last year’s numbers have pretty much been pushed beyond reach by the poor Day 1A showing. The field was once again heavy with PokerStars pros, among them Arnaud Mattern who was bounced early. Mattern was extremely active during the early stages of the poker tournament, unfortunately, all that activity ended up costing him chips. By the time he picked up an A,K, he was already quite short, which meant that it made perfect sense for him to shove all-in on the Big Slick. Things looked great for him preflop as he got a caller who had A,Q. The turn brought another Q and Mattern was done for the day.

John Duthie saw action too. He did extremely well during the early going, winning one hand after the other to amass an impressive pile of chips. He then decided to throw it all away on a bad bluff. That move was the first nail in the coffin of his tournament life. A few hands later, he was ready to get on his bike (or rather skis) and hit the slopes.
Martin Horecki didn’t fare a lot better either.

Martins Adeniya of the UK started out much like Duthie: building a large stack. Unlike Duthie though, he managed to preserve his status, eventually finishing as the chip leader, by quite a handsome margin too.
Josh Prager finished with a healthy stack as well, together with Dominik Nitsche.
