EPT Snowfest – Day 1A report

Posted by: Mark Baldwing - Mon, 2010-03-22 22:22

The first Day 1 flight of the first ever Snowfest EPT Main Event saw a starting field of 270 players belly up to the tables, following a night of free drinks, partying and fireworks. When the line was drawn at the end of the day, it was German player David Wintersberger who had managed to secure the chip lead. The way Wintersberger got to the top though was not particularly spectacular. He didn’t go around dominating opponents, and busting players out left and right. He kind of just slipped under the radar and got by middle-pack for most of the day. He rode a late surge into the lead, building up a stack of 290,000 chips. Though Winterberger may seem like a virtual unknown on the live poker tournament circuit, he is everything but. He finished in the money a few weeks ago in the EPT’s Berlin event and he made it all the way to 7th place in the EPT’s GBP500 London shootout.

PokerStars’ Julien Brecard and Bernhard Perner did well too, as they both finished the day with more than 230k chips.
Several pros from the Team PokerStars contingent had good days too. Vadim Markushevski was among them, together with Johannes Strassmann and Alex Kravchenko.

Daniel Negreanu and Arnaud Mattern were also among the survivors. The flow of eliminations began a few minutes into the day. Martin Kabrhel was the first victim of the day when he ran his pocket Ks into another player’s pocket rockets. The action soon got into high gear and the tables began to generate a steady stream of eliminations. PokerStars’ Martin Horecki and Stephen Chidwick were among the victims, together with Jeff Sarwer and Chad Brown.
Fatima de Melo, Olympic hockey player and PokerStars representative, busted out on Day 1A too. She wasted most of her chips on a bad call, going up with an A-high against a top pair. She then failed to build up momentum again and she eventually busted towards the end of the day.

For Day 1B, the organizers expect an even larger starting field to show up. Sandra Naujoks, Nacho Barbero and Dario Minieri are expected to get going on Day 1B, together with a bunch of other professionals. The overall starting field is expected to surpass the 600 player mark.
