EPT Vienna – Day 3 report

The Kursalon Palace in Vienna saw 80 players return for the 3rd day of the EPT’s Vienna Main Event. With the money bubble already out of the way, all 80 participants were sure to receive at least a minimum cash for their efforts, and that set their sights much higher. Team PokerStars Pro Daniel Negreanu was the one sporting the largest stack of chips at the beginning of day 3. When the day was over, he had lost his lead to Konstantinos Nanos, but he was still right there in second place, still a better than ideal position for the Canadian to return to on day 4.
Though – through his Vienna efforts – he’s already secured is best ever cash in a poker tournament, Nanos is by no means a push-over, especially in light of the fact that he’d managed to qualify for the EPT Vienna Main Event no fewer than 3 times. Nanos’ previous best cash was a $9.5k haul at an EPT Tallinn side event earlier in the year. He’s got none other than Daniel Negreanu breathing down his neck, so his moment of glory may just be around the corner.

Of the 80 players who returned to the green felt there was only one female: Maria Maceiras. Unfortunately, she failed to make it through the day. Among the Day 3 casualties were Anthony Roux, Nacho Barbero and Daniel Biro too. Luke Schwartz proved to be particularly unlucky as he kept dropping money on hands in which he was ahead before the shove. On one occasion, he was forced to split on an A,Q vs A, J race against Andrew Gulyy, then dropped a big pot to Gulyy when his pocket Ks fell to the latter’s pocket deuces. Negreanu almost clinched the chip lead towards the end of the day when he picked up a huge pot from an opponent on a Q,Q vs J,J match-up.
