EPT Vienna – Day 5: Michael Eiler wins

8 players returned to action on the final day of the
EPT’s Vienna Main Event. In the chip lead, a menacing figure was sharpening its claws, ready to devour all comers in pursuit of the €700k first prize. Needless to say, that big bad monster was Daniel Negreanu, whose large stack and fearsome live poker skills pretty much predicted an easy victory for the
PokerStars pro. A potential win would’ve delivered a lot more for Negreanu than for any of the other guys: on top of the above mentioned prize, he would’ve become the third player after Roland De Wolfe and Gavin Griffin to secure a coveted Triple Crown. He would also have overtaken Phil Ivey on the all time money-list.
Fate, Lady Luck and who knows what else didn’t want Negreanu to get his hands on all those things though. At the end of the final day of the
poker tournament, it was Germany’s Michael Eiler who lifted the trophy above his head, Negreanu long disposed-of in 4th place.
Bruno Launais was the first victim of the final table. He was eliminated by Luca Cainelli, whose pocket rockets got the best of his A,Jo on a J-high flop.
Matthias Lotze got lucky once, his A,Q hitting an A on the board against Eiler’s pocket Ks, but that double-up would only tide him through a few more hands. Soon, he was all-in again, this time on pocket 10s and Cainelli’s pocket Js spelt the end of his tournament life.
Andreas Wiese’s elimination slowed the pace of the action a little, but things got kicked into high gear again soon. Cainelli exited next in a hand in which Daniel Negreanu got crippled as well. The Canadian then dropped some more chips to Nanos before he was sent to the rail by Hruby.
Nanos was the one who exited in third to set up the heads-up stage between Eiler and Hruby. The rest is history: Eiler disposed of Hruby after having started with a 2-1 chip handicap.
