FTP Montreal Main Event – Day 1C Report

As it most often happens, it was the third and final Day 1 flight of Full Tilt Poker’s Montreal Main Event that drew the largest staring field. With the C$1 million guarantee already covered by the Day 1A and Day 1B registrants, no fewer than 610 players showed up for Day 1C. With that, the total for the event peaked at 1,625 players, smashing all records for the venue, the Playground Poker Club, as well as the guarantee which was essentially left in the dust.
About 170 players survived the last Day 1 flight, as Patrick St-Michel clinched the chip lead for the day as well as for the tournament. He had 456.7k chips bagged, which means he finished with only about 200 chips more than Vinny Pahuja.

St-Michel’s defining hand of the day occurred during level 10, when he found himself in a 3-way pot and a 3-way showdown, that resulted in his bouncing of two players: Paul Tsermentselis and James Belanger. The chips went into the middle on a board of 5h,10c,Jh,7h, but little did the other two know that by then, St-Michel was pretty much impossible to reel in: he had Kh, 6h for the near-nut flush. The other two players had pocket Qs and pocket rockets and they had obviously gotten married to their starting hands.

Local players Jason Duval and Kristen Bicknell were among the survivors as well, albeit the latter finished on a rather short stack of only 17.6k chips.
PokerStars pro Chris Moneymaker played on Day 1C too, but he failed to advance. The same fate befell Full Tilt’s own Tom Dwan. Dwan got his chips into the middle with a flush draw and a pair, but he never stood a chance against his opponent’s nuts.
He was joined on the rail by Will Failla and Trishelle Canatella.
