Full Tilt Poker’s Onyx Cup announced

The elite of the poker world is present at just about every live poker event featuring a decent-size buy-in, and thanks to the various prop bets which have become popular among these players lately, the elite shows up en-masse at all the
WSOP events. They rarely if ever get the opportunity to compete in tournaments where the field is made up exclusively of elite competitors though.
Full Tilt Poker’s Onyx Cup will create that opportunity for them. As Patrik Antonious put it in an interview with Ali Nejad regarding the matter, poker has been running around in circles for a while, and an event of the Onyx Cup’s magnitude may just be the something that’s needed to breathe new life into the high stakes live poker circuit.
The Onyx Cup will feature 5 preliminary events and a Grand Finale. Each and every one of these events will feature quite restrictive buy-ins, thus guaranteeing the elite makeup of the starting field. The preliminary events will cost $100k - $300k, and the Grand Finale will cost players $250k to enter. It will of course have $1 million added to its prize-pool.
There will be an Onyx Cup leader board as well and players will be able to collect leader board points by finishing in the top 3. The winner of the leader board will receive the Onyx Cup, which will effectively crown him the best of the best, and a sports car in addition to the prizes he collects.
The Onyx Cup’s events will take place in various locations in the US, Europe and Asia. The events will also be broadcast in at least 40 countries.
According to Ivey, the money factor is definitely a great plus, but the Onyx Cup is about much more than that. It was about playing similar caliber competition, and taking sometimes friendly rivalries to the green felt in style.
