Using an intricate formula to determine the best tournament players and to keep a continuously refreshed raking system going, the Global Poker Index has grown into a rather accurate mirror of the live poker scene. This week, despite the fact that the 2014 Player of the Year segment of the ranking system saw no changes whatsoever, there were quite a few significant moves at the top of the top 300.
PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu has finally moved into first place, and being a self-declared stats-junky, we’re pretty certain the Canadian is thrilled about this development. Vanessa Selbst moved up a spot as well, landing in second place, behind Negreanu. Ole Schemion, who had had a choke-hold on the top spot for quite a number of weeks, fell to 3rd place.
The PokerStars pro didn’t put in any kind of a high-impact performance in order to move up, rather, his jump was prompted by Schemion’s score-decay.

While Marvin Rettenmaier and Jason Mercier retained their 4th and 5th places respectively, below them, the top 10 exploded into bustle: Mike McDonald climbed a spot into 6th place. Sorel Mizzi climbed two places into 7th, while Dan Smith fell two spots into 8th. Ravi Raghavan climbed two spots as well, at Shannon Shorr’s expense, who fell into 10th.
Jonathan Duhamel was one of the biggest climbers at the top. Although he didn’t make it into the top 10, he climbed 5 places to land square on the bubble. Duhamel’s rise was due to a 9th place finish he had logged in the
EPT’s Vienna High Roller, which netted him a $54.9k reward.
By far the biggest climber of the week was Naoya Kihara, who moved up 106 places to land in 183rd.
