GPI PoY Race – Paul Volpe Leads

Paul Volpe has secured an iron grasp on the top position of the GPI’s Player of the Year race. Over the last week, the top 100 remained largely unchanged, with Volpe retaining his lead for the 3rd straight week. Volpe has indeed been rather dominant at the live poker tables this year. He made WPT final tables twice, as a matter of fact, they were back-to-back ones, in addition to several other deep runs in various poker tournaments. Volpe’s lead isn’t a comfortable one though: he barely edged out Mike Watson for the top spot. Watson has 5 top 3 finishes this year.
Dan Shak – who has spent some time as the leader too – is currently 3rd, followed by Christian Harder in 4th. Ana Marquez’s presence in 5th spot is a special one: she is the only female in the top 10. Marquez’s achievements include deep runs in the Venetian Deep Stack and the LA Poker Classic. In the LAPC Main Event, she finished 20th for $43.1k. She is followed by Scott Seiver in 6th.

Ole Schemion shot out of the gates in January, making two PokerStars Caribbean Adventure final tables, but he’s cooled off since. He is currently in 12th place. He is trailing fellow countryman Christopher Frank, who is in 11th thanks to a PCA side event deep run and a 6th place finish in the EPT’s London Main Event. He made a deep run in one of the EPT London side events as well.

The 2012 GPI Player of the year was Dan Smith, who has had a pretty quiet year thus far, thanks to which he failed to break into the top 100. Marvin Rettenmaier finished second last year. He is currently 48th, thanks to a 3rd place finish in the WPT’s Baden Main Event.
