GPI Race is on Again

Although we’re not usually fond of various systems ranking players according to who knows what kind of factors, we have to admit that we got caught up in the end of the year rush at the top of the GPI’s list. The Global Poker Index releases an updated leader board each week, so whenever a player accomplishes something big on the live circuit, he instantly earns GPI points and he moves up the ranks.
This week, the GPI list has been largely void of radical changes, as its top 10 has remained pretty much unchanged. Dan Smith is still firmly in charge, with 3.3k points to his name. He is still followed by Marvin Rettenmaier, who has 3.29k points. Other players in the top 10 are Jason Mercier, Betrand Grospellier, Andrew Lichtenberger, Joseph Cheong, Mike Watson, Vanessa Selbst and David Sands. Although the top 10 saw no movers and shakers, there were players who managed to inch up the ranks further down the list. One such player was Shannon Shorr, who won a $10k
Limit Holdem 6-max event at the
PCA to earn a handful of GPI points, enough to advance to 12th place, positioning himself within striking distance of the top 10.
The biggest progress through the GPI ranks belonged to Timothy Chang, who advanced 68 positions. There were three players who broke into the top 300 (the GPI only tracks the 300 best players): Nam Le, who landed in 272nd place, Terrence Chan (who oddly enough, made the list for the first time too) and Daniele Mazzia, who claimed 298th place, just slipping in under the radar.
Aaron Lim’s was the biggest drop of the week. He lost a massive 42 positions. Jake Cody, John Dolan and Andrew Chen were among the losers as well.
