GPI Tournament Rankings – Mercier Still in the Lead

While it’s the GPI’s Player of the Year list that we pay most attention to (since that’s where most of the climbing and dropping happens), in order to gain a more or less accurate idea about whom the hottest player currently is, is pays to take a look at the Tournament Rankings too. The GPI tournament list ranks the top 300 tournament players based on their last 6 half-year periods.
The current leader is PokerStars’ Jason Mercier, who just managed to edge out Bertrand Grospellier. Grospellier has been on a bit of a rally lately, having chipped away 47 points from his fellow PokerStars pro’s lead since the last time the rankings were updated.

In order to pull off the rally, the Frenchman turned in some pretty nice results in the last few months: he finished 7th in the EPT Barcelona’s €10k High Roller event, and he finished 4th in the LA Poker Classic’s $25k NL Holdem High Roller.
Thanks to the start of the new EPT season, several new players managed to break into the GPI’s top 300 for the first time.
Joni Jouhkimainen took down more than €400k for his EPT Barcelona Main Event 3rd place. The achievement gave him 1,535 GPI points, landing him in 129th on the list. Other players who recently broke into the top 300 are Anatoly Gurtovy, Zoltan Szabo, Jan Heitmann, Jonathan Karamalikis and Matthias De Meulder.
In order for the above said players to appear in the top 300, several others were dropped, among them quite a few ‘name’ players. Michael Tureniec, Mike Sexton and Benny Spindler were among those who slid out of sight.
This week, the player to register the biggest gain was Jean-Norel Thorel, who moved upward 108 places thanks to his 6th place finish in the EPT Barcelona’s €19k High Roller. Alex Bilokur and Tobias Reikenmaier, who finished 2nd and 3rd in that same poker tournament moved up quite a bit too.
