Jason Mercier adds WCOOP title to trophy case

Jason Mercier has been one of the players with the most diverse repertoire when it came to the variety of live poker events won, for quite a while. His latest addition to an already impressive trophy case was a WCOOP title, which instantly made him one of the top players ever to play the game, both on ESPN’s rankings and on Daniel Negreanu’s personal list of preferences (which probably means more than any official list).
Mercier spent 3 consecutive days in his hotel room playing poker in order to secure the coveted bracelet, and eventually did so without ever having made a WCOOP final table before.
He said he felt he had a fair shot on Day 1, even as the money bubble was nowhere on the horizon. He had just dropped down to 1,400 chips, having lost a $65k pot, and he managed to work his way back to a stack of 80k. That offered him a legit stack on which he could start Day 2.
When asked about how significant he thought his achievement was, Mercier said the size of the field that he had to overcome alone was enough cause to celebrate.
Another thing that really added flavor to Mercier’s win was the spectacular comeback he pulled off at the final table.
Barely had the final table action kicked off, Mercier took a huge hit, his A,K losing to an opponent’s A,Q to put him onto the brink of elimination with just 16 BBs in his stack. The seasoned pro didn’t lose his cool though. He worked his way right back into the action and eventually walked away with the win in event #42.
On his way to the title, Mercier survived a field of 3,122 players, among them notable names like
PokerStars’ Barry Greenstein and Chad Brown.
