The expected value in every multi table poker tournament is a function of the prize-pool offered and the number of registrants. The higher the prize-pool, the better the EV+ is. Likewise, the lower the number of participants, the better the EV+ gets. Unfortunately, most poker tournaments tie the prize-pool to the number of participants. These tournaments make their prize-pools by pooling the player buy-ins.
Guaranteed prize-pool tournaments sever this link. They “guarantee” a certain prize-pool, which means that regardless of the number of participants, the prize-pool will remain the same. The poker room takes a risk with these events, hoping that enough players will show up to cover the guarantee.
Ladbrokes Poker’s 100 series tournaments are such guaranteed prize-pool events. A prize-pool of €30,000 is guaranteed and the registration is capped at 100. Most MTT’s offering similarly sized prize-pools feature thousands of entrants, which means you’ll have to beat thousands of players to reach the money bubble. In
Ladbrokes’ 100 series tourneys, you only need to dispose of 99 opponents to win. This and the generous prize-pool inject some excellent EV+ into these online events.
The first ever 100 Series event kicks off on Monday, December 7th and it will feature a buy-in of €300+€20. Registration is capped at 100, and the event is designed to cover the guarantee from the buy-ins spot on. While the buy-in is not exactly small, the fact that you’ll have to beat only 99 players to take down the lion’s share of a €30,000 prize-pool is still there. Obviously, regardless of the buy-in, each individual player’s chances to make the money are at least ten fold as good as in a regular MTT.
Of course, you don’t have to cough up the direct buy-in either. Satellites run for the 100 series events already, and you can win a seat for a little as €3.5 through the month of November.
Meant as an early Christmas present, the Dec 7 100 series event will feature 5,000 chip starting stacks and 20 minute blinds.
