The final table of the
PokerStars LAPT’s Punta Del Este Main Event turned out to be a rather short affair. A winner emerged in less than 5 hours and that winner was a Uruguayan: Alex Komaromi. Komaromi had to best a whole bunch of South Americans on his way to the top: there were 4 Brazilians, one Peruvian, one Argentine and one Venezuelan at the final table.
Komaromi started the final stretch in the enviable position of the chip leader and he knew he could afford to take the early going easy. He laid back letting Engelberth Varela do the hard work in the beginning. Varela took over indeed, and the first two players who hit the rail got there thanks to him. As the field whittled down to 6, Komaromi figured it was time he swung into action too, lest Varela should build much too large a stack. Nelson Trad Neto was the first player who crossed paths with Komaromi. Neto had an A,Q against Komaromi’s pocket 8s. Komaromi proceeded to make a set on the turn to seal the deal.
A little later, Komaromi picked up a pocket pair yet again: this time he had pocket 10s. He got Felipe Pasini all-in with Jd, Qd and sure enough his hand held again.
Varela scored the next elimination, sending Carlos Watanabe home in 4th place.
The way things were going, it was only a matter of time till Komaromi would get to lock horns with Varela. When it happened, it was the Uruguayan who got the upper hand, his A,8 marginally out-kicking his opponent’s A,6o.
Going into heads-up play against Claudio Piedrabuena, Komaromi had a massive chip advantage. The Argentine bounced back against all odds but Komaromi had the bull by the horns by then and soon re-took the lead. The final hand of the event saw Komaromi’s J,2 triumph over Piedrabuena’s Kc,10c.
