Negreanu Chimes in on 2015 WSOP Main Event $10 Million Guarantee

PokerStars’ Daniel Negreanu has never been shy to speak his mind, and as the
WSOP announced its 2015 schedule, revealing various details about the Main Event and its prize-structure, he was once again quick to offer up his opinion on the matter of the $10 million guarantee, which will apparently return for the winner of the Big Dance. The gist of it is that Negreanu doesn’t want the guarantee back.
Last year’s WSOP was when the $10 million guarantee made its debut, and the one who picked it up was Sweden’s Martin Jacobson, who overcame a field of some 6.7k players to make it all the way to the top of the pops. Last year’s Main Event was also the one which finally reversed the trend of ever-shrinking starting fields, which have made the beating of Jamie Gold’s 2006 first-place haul record quite impossible.

Negreanu is obviously glad to see the Main Event grow again, but he has a different formula in mind when it comes to dividing the prize-pool. Instead of giving a huge chunk of the loot to the winner, he would make sure that everyone who makes the final table ends up earning at least $1 million. The rest of the money should go towards rewarding those who make it deep in the tournament.
Indeed, Negreanu’s formula harkens back to 2006, the last time when a 9th place finisher picked up a $1 million haul. The disparity between the prize taken down by the winner and by the runner-up was the highest in 2006 and last year, when Stephensen got some $5.1 million for his second place effort.
