APPT Macau - Day 1C report

Posted by: James Carter. - Fri, 2008-09-05 14:39

Day 1C of the APPT saw an almost unexpectedly large player turn out. The field of 229 participants contained plenty of big names, amongst which Joe and Tony Hachem, Men and Van Nguyen, J.C. Tran, John Phan, JJ Liu and last year’s champion, Dinh Le.

Because the field was extremely strong, it was inevitable that some of the big names bust out early. Tony Hachem was among the early victims of attrition as he shoved all in on a flop of 6,2,9 holding 6d,4d in his pocket. An opponent called him with Q,Q and since nothing came on the turn or the river to help Tony out, he got sent to the rail.

J.C. Tran was looking good with his pocket Ks against an opponent’s pocket Qs, that was until the flop hit the table. The 7,Q,4 was the last thing Tran was looking for, but he didn’t know that, and after the turn he check-raised the opponent with the Q,Q all-in. He got the call and soon headed to the rail as nothing improved on the river.

John Phan has had a great 2008 so far, but Day 1C of the APPT Macau would not be his day. He busted out relatively early too, when his A,5 bumped into an opponent’s J,J on a board of J,4,3,10,5. Hevad Khan and Dinh Le were also eliminated. Last year’s champion decided he wasn’t going to take any chances with his pocket Ks and shoved all-in preflop, only to be called by Joon Hee Yeah, who held A,J. In a classic case of pocket kings being cracked by A-rag, the flop came 6,Q,4 and the turn was an A. The river didn’t help Le so he got felted too.
Joe Hachem did survive, but he got hit badly by a bad beat shortly before the day was called. He managed to get someone all-in, his Q,Q facing pocket 8s, but a third 8 fell on the flop giving the pot, and most of Hachem’s chips to the underdog.

Isabelle Mercier, Terrence Chan, and David Chiu all survived on reasonable stacks, with the chip lead going to Mark Walsh who managed to build up a 95,000 strong stack.
