Online poker action – Ivey drops some dough

Who would have thought it was possible? Phil Ivey dropping some dough at the online poker tables, that is. That’s exactly what happened the other day though, when Ivey and Daniel Cates – both in Australia playing in various Aussie Millions events and in the Million Dollar Cash Game – got together for a little online fun at
Full Tilt Poker’s tables.
The session quickly degenerated into an all-out war, resulting in the only $200k pot of the last few days. The hand in which the said pot developed started out with the regular preflop give and take, so by the time the A,J,8 fell on the flop, there was already plenty of dough in the middle. Ivey checked the flop, prompting Cates to fire out an $18.6k bet. Ivey made it $88.2k, in response to which Cates shoved all-in. Ivey made the call and tabled A,K,10,7 for the top pair as well as two straight and one flush draws. Cates had A,A,3,2 for the top set. The two only ran the turn and the river once and the 3c on the turn and the 5d on the river did nothing to help Ivey, who thus surrendered the $270k pot to his opponent.
Several other six-figure pots developed in the wake of the above detailed monster, and Cates continued to do well, taking down a $120k pot and then a $103k one in its wake.
The $120k pot saw Cates hit a nut flush. Ivey folded and didn’t show his cards. In the other 6-figure hand, Ivey hit the nut straight on the flop, but Cates recovered on the turn, making a boat. The river failed to give Ivey a better boat and the fate of the pot was yet again decided in Cates’ favor.
Patrik Antonius and Daniel Cates were the week’s biggest winners. Di Dang and Scott Palmer headlined the losers’ list, both of them almost $1 million in the red.
