PartyPoker Gearing Up for First New Jersey Weekend

Having prepared their return to the US for years, PartyPoker have made it clear that they weren’t about to lollygag waiting for their New Jersey player base to build up the economical and old-fashioned way. A couple of days ago, the site announced that this upcoming Sunday, which marks the first ever fully legalized and regulated online poker weekend in the Garden State, they would feature a Sunday Major, a NL Holdem event offering a $50 guarantee. While the guarantee does not seem like an overly impressive one in comparison to what sites like
PokerStars offer to their international players, given the circumstances of the recent launch and the limited nature of the New Jersey market, the move is indeed an unheard-of one.
According to
PartyPoker spokesperson Mike Sexton, players will indeed be hard-pressed to find anything of similar value anywhere online, especially if one is talking about New Jersey-based players, who do not really have access to any of the other markets. Sexton has pretty much acknowledged that the major guarantee would probably result in an overlay, but that obviously only serves to make the event even more attractive for players. PartyPoker will of course have to foot the bill for the overlay, but they’re apparently ready to give their fans a nice Thanksgiving surprise.
Despite the shallow projected nature of the competition, winning the first PartyPoker weekend major will not be a walk in the park: several of the site’s top pros will play in the event: Scott Baumstein will be there, together with Bobby Oboodi and Jamie Kerstetter.
Given the fact that PartyPoker are only one of a handful of online poker operators who have gained approval to offer real money poker in New Jersey, one wouldn’t be off the mark to expect the competitors to begin matching PartyPoker’s $50k weekend major move soon.
