PCA $25k High Rollers event – Day 2 report

151 players had originally registered for the $25k High Roller of the 2011 PCA, thus setting a new record for the event. Of these players, 90 made their way back to the Atlantis Resort and Casino for day 2. The goal was for these guys to play down to a final table, but after 14 hours of struggles, the organizers admitted defeat and drew the line at the final 12. These guys will return on the last day to play down to a winner.
Given that it’s a high roller event we’re talking about, the first few positions on the chip leader board were quite naturally occupied by “name” pros. PokerStars’ Jason Mercier was the one who finished with the largest stack. He was followed by David Baker, Max Lykov and Leo Fernandez.
Tom Marchese will also be among the 12 who will return, together with Erik Seidel.

Ryan Fair was the start of the day chip leader, and it was at his expense that Jason Mercier made such spectacular progress. A huge hand developed between the two players, which saw Mercier get extremely aggressive preflop from early position. Defending his BB and holding 10,10 in his pocket, Fair wasn’t about to be pushed around. He re-raised and Mercier did too, until both of them found themselves all-in. Mercier then revealed an Ad, Kd. The flop fell K,Q,A rainbow, giving Mercier the lead. Fair was still left with 4 outs for a straight, but the Q on the turn and the 3 on the river sealed the deal.
Numerous name pros were eliminated through the day. Joe Cada was among them, together with Joe Hachem, Humberto Brenes, Vanessa Rousso and Johnny Lodden.
Fair joined the casualty list too, when his pocket 4s fell to Erik Seidel’s Ad, 7d late in the day.
