The PokerStars Caribbean Adventure kicked off with the Super High Rollers event, which attracted a starting field of 38 on its first day. Before you shrug it off as unimpressive, consider the size of the buy-in and you’ll understand why only 38 people deemed it reasonable to cough up the money.
On day 2, 23 of the initial 38 players returned to action. It only took these guys about 6 hours to play down to the final table.
Nick Schulman was the one with the largest stack of chips when the day was called. The field that bellied up to the tables at the beginning of the day was by no means a weak one: Sorel Mizzi, Antonio Esfandiari, Phil Laak and David Benyamine were all there. None of this illustrious and motley band of poker celebrities managed to survive the day though.
Another “name” player to bite the dust on Day 2 was
PokerStars’ own Jason Mercier. He picked up a pair of Qs and ran them right into Nick Schulman’s Aces to contribute significantly to the latter’s field-leading stack and to end his tournament run.
Shawn Buchanan had a similar fate. Instead of pocket Qs though, he ran pocket 10s into Humberto Brenes’ pocket Qs. Andrew Robl on the other hand got the last of his chips in on some decent pocket Ks. He got called by an A,6 and sure enough another A fell on the board to send him packing well short of the final table too.
One would think that coming into the day with the largest stack would offer a body some protection from variance, but in a high rollers’ event of this caliber, that is clearly not the case.
Tobias Reikenmeier, the Day 1 chip leader lost a few key hands and eventually got the last of his chips into the middle holding A,J. Schulman and Vivek Rajkumar all pounced on the opportunity to chip up significantly. Schulman had pocket rockets which held up to vault him into the chip lead.
