Penalized for Excessive Celebration, Matusow Takes WSOP Center Stage Again

Mike “The Mouth” Matusow has been known to attract attention in various (usually rather controversial ways) at WSOP tournaments in the past, and this year, he hit center stage again, in a similarly negative fashion. In event #25, the $2.5k 7 Card Stud hi/lo/Omaha mixed event, Matusow picked up a one-round penalty from WSOP floorman Dave Lamb, for excessive celebration. The Mouth was all-in, deep in the tournament, and he was looking to triple up in a Stud Hi/Lo hand, which he eventually did. Following that, he erupted in loud celebration, given that the triple-up put his stack right above the average with 22 players remaining between him and his 5th WSOP bracelet.
Matusow’s celebration didn’t really offend anyone, and unlike some of his past antics, they weren’t directed at humiliating any of his opponents. He was just doing laps around the table screaming and claiming that the tournament was over.

Matusow was certainly already planning how he would capitalize on the momentum of his triple-up, but he then got hit with a one-round penalty, which instantly deflated his bubble. Some of the other players still in contention, like Joe Tehan and Ahmed Owais intervened on the Mouth’s behalf, but Lamb was adamant in his decision. Since then, other players have spoken up against the penalty Matusow had incurred, through Twitter and through their personal blogs. One of the players who went to great lengths to decry the penalty in a blog post was PokerStars pro Daniel Negreanu.
Matusow did return to action after he sat out his penalty, but his momentum was irrevocably gone, and about an hour later, so was his stack. He bit the dust in 19th place, picking up $7.78k.
