Poker Downswings – Jason Mercier’s Bad Year

PokerStars Pro Jason Mercier is a true headliner: he is usually present wherever anything significant goes down poker-wise, and he is usually among those who are still around as the final table approaches. Naturally one would assume that he is a successful poker professional, which is indeed the case if one doesn't consider his absolutely abysmal 2012 run. If one is to rely on information disseminated by various online profit tracking operations, one would think that Mercier finished last year with a profit of $523,000, which of course isn't true. There are ups and downs in the life of a poker professional which online portals simply have no way of knowing about or covering. Mercier has opened up in this respect in a
PokerStars blog post in which he revealed that 2012 was his worst year as a poker professional and the first one ever which he actually closed with significant losses.
His problems began last January in Los Angeles when he reportedly incurred a loss of about $500,000. Although - to an outside observer - that may not seem like a significant sum when it comes to poker professionals of Mercier's caliber, it was in fact a rather significant hit, one that his bankroll didn’t managed to absorb during the year.
For 2013, Mercier has set a lofty goal of finishing with a profit of at least $1 million, partly to make up for his 2012 losses and partly to just be successful at what he does. He plans to achieve his goal by playing in as many high buy-in live
poker tournaments as possible. He also plans to grind away at the cash game tables as much as he can. He will of course play in the 2013 WSOP too. In his post, Mercier has also reiterated his love for the game.
