The PokerStars Asia Pacific Poker Tour’s latest stop was hosted by the Shangri La Mactan resort and Spa in Cebu. While only 105 players showed up for Day 1A of the poker tournament, experts were quick to point it out that the make-up of the field (with very few known faces and mostly live poker rookies) was a clear indication of the increase in popularity the game of poker has seen lately in Asia.
Sure enough, the biggest name registered for Day 1A was David Steicke. He however shoved up an hour late for the event, probably taken up by all the other entertainment possibilities the beautiful and exotic location offered. His tardiness cost him his
tournament life though. His stack already decimated by the time he sat down behind it, he became one of the first eliminations of the event. One thing is certain: PokerStars sure know how to pick the locations of their poker tournaments. By signing up to
PokerStars, you too will be able to win a seat in one of these events online, for a fraction of the actual buy-in.
At the end of the day, the chip lead went to Terry Fan, who had accumulated a 140,000 chip stack.
The colorful nature of the field could certainly not be disputed. There was a group of Mongolian players there, the members of which played some rather unorthodox poker to say the least. They topped that off with some rather out of place table behavior so no, the event wasn’t boring by any measure.
Meenelai Bold stood out of this group, both through his table gestures and through the size of the stack he managed to accumulate. For some reason, he kept slamming the table before every street, probably his way to convince the gods of poker to give him the right cards. While something like this would be perfectly ok at the online poker tables, it drew quite a bit of attention at the WPT’s tables.
Bold did fine though. For a while he had the chip lead, and at the end of the day he finished with 110,000 chips, so we’re certain to see some more table slamming on Day 2.
