PokerStars APPT Cebu – Day 1B report

Posted by: James Carter. - Fri, 2009-11-13 05:48

Despite the fact that only 105 players had registered for Day 1A of the PokerStars.net APPT Cebu, the poker tournament managed to become the largest ever live poker event held in the Philippines. Organizers had capped the starting field at 300, but because of increased demand on Day 1B, the cap had to be removed and eventually a total of 319 starters were registered for the event. The total prize-pool was set to $600,000, that too a new record in the Philippines.
As usual, the majority of those intent on taking part, showed up on the second Day 1 flight. The field was more numerous and there were more “name” pros in it. Team PokerStars members Celina Lin, Tony Hachem, Eric Assadourian and Bryan Huang were all there, as was Ramil Tandoc, Tommy Le, Denis Huntley and Phillip Willcocks.

Unfortunately for them though, the “name pros didn’t do too well. Newcomers dominated early on as the Australian pro contingent took hit after hit. Eric Assadourian and Aaron Benton were eliminated first, followed soon by Steve Bouya and Tony Hachem. Team PokerStars members were sent to the rail en masse too. Tae Jun Noh was the first PokerStars casualty. Celina Lin in the meantime failed to get anything going and she struggled through the day never managing to exceed her starting stack.
Bryan Huang and Jonathan Lin on the other hand did manage to get something going, unfortunately for them though, in the wrong direction. They did eventually survive Day 1B, but they’d show up for day 2 with about half as many chips as they’d started the day with.

Apparently, one had to be a low profile participant (like an online poker qualifier) to get anything going on Day 1. Brian Bumpas of the US clinched the chip lead near the end of the day and he held on to finish not only the flight leader but the overall chip leader as well, his 143,000 stack just enough to overtake Day 1A chip leader Terry Fan. Jerry Delisle and Mike Gaertner finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
More than 100 players survived the Day 1B attrition, and they’ll join the Day 1A survivors to form a field of 158 on Day 2.
