PokerStars APPT Grand Final – Day 2 report

Posted by: James Carter. - Sun, 2009-12-06 09:45

Over 200 players showed up for Day 2 of the PokerStars APPT Grand Final’s second day. No energy and hustle was spared this day to thin the field down and to approach the money bubble as much as possible. Those who survived one of the three day 1 flights on a short-stack were eager to chip up or go. Those who had large stacks were hell bent on further increasing them. Out of the ensuing chaos Tom Grigg emerged as the provisional chip leader.

Grigg began the day as one of the chip leaders and he managed to add to his already large stack all through the day. Often, he made things look so simple it looked like his opponents were eager to hand him their chips.
In one hand, the preflop betting round between him and an opponent degenerated into an all-in. His opponent had pushed about 140,000 chips into the middle, only to table a 3s, 4s, well behind of Grigg’s A,Ko. The board brought no help for either of the players and the 335,000 chip pot was shipped Grigg’s way. That was only one of the numerous pots Grigg took down to end up with 600,000 chips at the end of the day.

Jimmy Tran did pretty well too, and so did Team PokerStars’ own Eric Assadourian. A large part of Assadourian’s chips came from David Steicke, from a perfect hand that developed between the two of them.
Both players flopped a heart flush and both of them promptly shoved all-in too. As the pocket cards were turned over though, it became obvious that Steicke never stood a chance. His Qh, Jh was only enough for a Q-high flush while Assadourian’s Ah, 9h hit the nut flush. The turn and the river had no backdoor surprises in store and thus Steicke headed to the rail to ponder about the role of the luck factor in poker as the Pokerstars pro raked in his chips.

Steicke wasn’t the only name player who found the rail on day 2 though. Billy Argyros, Terrence Chan, Casey Kastle, Mark Vos (who had had a pretty good day 1c) and Tony Dunst were all eliminated too.
The survivors will match skills (and luck) on day 3 of the poker tournament.
