PokerStars APPT Grand Final Sydney – Day 1B report

The second Day 1 flight of the 2009 PokerStars APPT Grand Final saw a field of 109 players belly up to the tables. At the end of it all, it was poker veteran Leo Boxell who had clinched the chip lead. The Aussie
poker tournament specialist had accumulated a 148,000 chip stack, which put him into a prime position to attempt a deep run on Day 2.
Boxell’s sudden rise to the top of the provisional leader board came courtesy of
PokerStars qualifier Brian Wilson. The former WSOP bracelet winner went all-in preflop holding Ks, Qs against Boxell’s pocket 10s. The flop gave the lead the Wilson, who hit a K. The problem was that while a 3rd 10 failed to show up on the board, four hearts fell, and as one of his 10s was a heart too, Boxell took down the pot. That was the hand that most of his chips came from.
Other players who did well on Day 1B were David Hibbot, Brandon Rubio and Tom Grigg. Rubio won some sturdy pots early on and managed to hold on to his advantage. Grigg shot to the top during the later stages of the day. He took down a solid hand when there was about 1 more hour of action left.
Brandon Edmonds was his opponent in that hand. The board read 5c,5d,5s,2d,8c when Edmonds fired out a 28,000 chip bet. Grigg had a pair of Js in his pocket, enough for the boat and enough to beat Edmonds’ K-high. Edmonds was probably tricked by the set on the board, which made him think a K-high would at least earn him a chop. That win took Grigg’s stack to about 120,000 chips. He didn’t stop there though. He busted one more player to reach the 140,000 mark before the end of the day.
David Steicke shared a table with Wooka Kim for the entire day, and miraculously, they both survived.
Last year’s PokerStars APPT champion, Martin Rowe was also there, and he survived the day too, together with Michael Guzzardi and Amanda de Cesare.
Day 1c of the event is expected to draw the largest starting field of the 3 day 1 flights.
