PokerStars APPT Macau – Day 1A Report

The first of the two day 1 flights of the PokerStars APPT’s Macau Main Event is in the books. 269 players showed up at the beginning of the day, putting in 8 full levels before the action was called. Chieh Su-Shih finished with the biggest stack, having amassed more than $171k. The whole buzz around the start of the event was overshadowed by Phil Ivey’s return to the green felt. For days, there had been rumors circulating about Ivey’s presence in Macau. Those rumors then intensified as people began talking about Ivey attending the event. Eventually, the ex-Full Tilt Poker pro did show up indeed, putting all those rumors to rest. He didn’t talk a whole lot during the day, allowing his chips and his skills to do the talking for him at the table.

During the last level of the day, Ivey’s stack reached its peak of 95k chips. The hand which led to this respectable stack-size was one which began with an opponent firing out a massive preflop bet from middle position. Ivey made the call, and the flop fell 9d,Jc,9h. Sitting on the button, Ivey had the advantage. Past the flop, the other player fired out another bet which Ivey called again to see the 7c fall on the turn. Both players checked the turn to see the 5c drop on the river. The other guy fired out another bet and Ivey pushed 5k chips into the middle. His opponent folded and Ivey pocketed his chips. Despite his feel-good run, Ivey ended up dropping some of his chips, to finish with a stack of 51k.

An impressive number of ‘name’ players turned up to play and most of them made it past the hurdle successfully. Grant Levy was among these players, together with David Steicke and Julian Powell.
Andrew Hinrichsen and Jonathan Karamalikis both failed to advance. They were joined on the rail by Mark Vos and Emanuel Seal.
