PokerStars APPT Macau – Day 1b report

The second day 1 flight of the APPT’s Macau stop saw 84 players belly up to the tables of the Grand Lisboa Hotel and Casino. Even though there were fewer registrants hitting the green felt on Day 1b, the field may yet grow further as a third Day 1 flight, Day 1c is still to come.
Like Day 1a, Day 1b consisted of 7 levels of play, at the end of which, of the 84 starters only 36 were still standing.
The chip leaders were Henrik Gwinner and David Steicke.

Gwinner’s story is an interesting one. Originally from Denmark, Gwinner is currently a resident of Hong Kong hence his proximity to Macau. On Day 1b, he was quiet for most of the day, as he kept accumulating chips under the radar. Towards the end, he surged forth though and took down a huge pot during the last level of the day to finish at the top. He was lucky enough to pick up a pair of As to beat another guy’s pocket Js for the win in the above said crucial hand.

David Steicke accumulated the majority of his chips during the early going. He shot straight out of the gate as soon and the action kicked off and secured a few big pots. He kept taking down pots through the day, and at the end of it all, he sat with a 124,950 stack, enough for second place on the provisional leader board.
Ramon Cserei had an excellent poker tournament too. He took a huge pot off Roger Spets during the final stretch to build a stack that would land him in 3rd place.
Steicke, Cserei and Gwinner all managed to overtake Day 1a’s chip leader, Andrew Chieng.

PokerStars’ JC Tran and John Phan represented the other end of the spectrum,. They both had awful starts and found themselves relegated to short-stack status within a few hands. None of them managed to survive to Day2. A similar Fate befell Terrance Chan, who failed to gain any sort of traction on Day 1b too.
PokerStars’ Eric Assadourian survived but only just. He will be one of the shortest stacks on Day 2 of the poker tournament. Andrew Scott and Neil Arce were two other online poker site protégés who survived the day.
