PokerStars Caribbean Adventure high rollers event – Day 1

The $25,000 high rollers event at the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure attracted a field comprised almost exclusively of “name “ players. The high buy-in always acts as a filter: it sieves out amateurs and to a certain degree even online poker qualifiers. What remains are the high stakes regulars for whom the buy-in is nothing but a tiny investment well worth the potentially huge winnings that may come with it.
Last year, it was French pro and multi tabling genius Bertrand Grospellier who took the title and the prize. This year, he was obviously the man to beat. About 80 players were present at the start of the action, and about 50 when the chips were bagged. PokerStars’ own Lex Veldhuis clinched the chip lead at the end of day 1. Another PokerStars pro, Dario Minieri is second in chips. Minieri was one of the most aggressive players of the day. He sent several fellow pros to the rail. Veldhuis played like a madman too, but most of his chips were donated to him by Justin Bonomo.

Joe Cada was another one of the front runners. The WSOP Main Event’s newest champion amassed a 164,400 stack. Isaac Baron shared tables with Cada all day, though he avoided locking horns with him. Baron did pretty well too.
Team PokerStars survived the day en masse: Peter Eastgate, Sandra Naujoks, Daniel Negreanu and Greg Raymer all survived to fight another day.

John Duthie who’d had an awesome run in the PokerStars Caribbean Adventure Main Event, had it going much tougher this time around. He was one of the casualties of day one, joined on the rail by Jason Mercier and Alexandre Gomes. Jason Mercier shoved all-in preflop against Andrew Lichtenberger, holding a Kd, Jd. Lichtenberger had K,Q though, and Mercier never managed to get anything going on the board.
Lee Markholt matched skills and luck with Mike Matusow. Markholt had pocket rocket’s against Matusow’s pocket Ks. The legendarily unlucky Matusow caught a lucky break this time though and landed a third K to knock Markholt out and to add to his stack significantly.
