PokerStars EPT Berlin – Day 1b report

As expected, Day 1B of the
EPT Berlin stop yielded a starting field next to which the Day 1A turnout faded into the background. No fewer than 458 players showed up, €5k in hand and hope in their hearts to make the money and possibly even the final table. That number represented a 50% increase on the previous day’s yield, and it meant that all three floors of the SpielBank would fill up to the brink. As a matter of fact, for a while there in the beginning, several tables were forced to play 10-handed.
By the end of the second level, enough players were eliminated though to allow things to slip back onto track.
Because of the larger field of participants, it became obvious from the start that the eventual Day 1B chip leader would clinch the overall chip lead too, and indeed, that’s exactly how it happened. Sander Berndsen managed to accumulate a stack of 242,900 chips, well above Day 1A chip leader Cristian Dragomir’s haul. A good percentage of Berndsen’s chips came from Jens Kylonnen, but Robert Flink “contributed” too. Flink eventually finished 3rd on the Day 1B leader board.
Many of the ‘name’ players who failed to show up on Day 1A, got rolling on Day 1B. Boris Becker was among them. Now a
PokerStars SportStar, the German drew quite a bit of attention from the members of the press. Unfortunately for him, he was bounced about halfway through the day, when he committed the last of his chips on an A,K against an opponent’s pocket 6s. The pocket pair held and Becker was done.
Last year’s champion, Kevin MacPhee was eliminated as well, in quite an inauspicious hand: he shoved all-in after misreading his hand. He got called with the same measly pair, but his opponent’s higher kicker was enough to make a difference and he hit the rail. With him perished the possibility of a repeat winner in this year’s EPT Berlin Main Event.
