The
EPT London Main Event reached a conclusion after 6 days of action, at the end of which Benny Spindler emerged with the win. Spindler took home £750k for his efforts, coupled with the customary bragging rights of course. Spindler defeated none other than Steve O’Dwyer heads-up. O’Dwyer’s presence at the heads-up stage was somewhat surprising in light of the fact that he had been the official short-stack of the final table.
Spindler was one of the Day 1 chip leaders and he came into the final stretch of the tournament 3rd in chips. He put his healthy stack to use at the final table, and he soon took over the lead, after busting a bluff from Mattias Bergstrom. That pot was only the start of Spindler’s final table run though. Shortly after he took the chip lead, he locked horns with start of the day chip leader Martins Adeniya and won a coin-flip to expand his lead.
The chips went into the middle before the flop on what would turn out to be Adeniya’s final hand in the tournament. Spindler had pocket 10s against Adeniya’s A,K and the board only brought blanks.
O’Dwyer swung into action too: he doubled up through Andrey Klebanov and then proceeded to bust Mattias Bergstrom in 5th place. These two accomplishments not only saved O’Dwyer from the edge of elimination, they put him into contention for the chip lead. Spindler would have none of that though. He ushered out the last remaining
PokerStars Pro, Juan Manuel Pastor in 4th place.
O’Dwyer retaliated by eliminating Andrey Klebanov in 3rd place, but at the start of the heads-up stage, he was still behind by about 2 chips to 1.
The two players must’ve lost patience by that stage because they put a quick end to the tournament: the heads-up stage only lasted for 2 hands. The final hand saw Spindler’ A,K best O’Dwyer’s K,J for the win.
